New webserver!

Wednesday, December 31st, 2003

Long and the short of it, I’ve got a new webserver of my very own! It’s made from old parts and it’s running Linux on an AMD K6-2 400MHz with 128MB of RAM, and a 1.6GB hard drive. It’s sitting here on my desk right next to my big computer and it’s name is “Spyder”. I’ve got a picture if you wanna see. I’ve been trying to get the hardware working for the past week or two and tonight I did the software install. I installed the OS, got the web server working, and then the database. That took a bit and there were some hitches involving database keys and timezones. Very weird stuff. Anyways, this thing is running out of my living room so we’ll see how that goes. On the plus side, I now have quite a lot more disk space than I used to. Problem is that I’m not sure how static this IP address is and I have no permanent DNS entry. I was wondering if my pal Bill had any advice on this.

Well, that was nice and technical. Hope it all works out. In other news, we had a LAN party over in the good ol’ UO dorms and it was totally sweet. The word to descibe the Starcraft game was “Epic”. It lasted about 3 hours or something. Very cool. I’ve got some pics of the event and I’ll post here again when I get ’em up. Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve and Kim’s thowing a party over at dad and Estelle’s place, so that should be fun. A good portion of my readership will be there, so I’ll try to get some pics of y’all and post ’em here so everyone can see themselves. =)

That’s all from me! Enjoy the snow, Eugene!!! (Yeah, it snowed. Talk about burying the lead!)

Christmas time come and gone

Saturday, December 27th, 2003

Well, another Christmas has come to a close here at ChrisWeb. Not a whole lot say, except thank you to all who gave me nice things and thank you again to all whom I had the pleasure of hanging out with over the holiday. It was a nice break from the duldrum of work, which I am at right now. Joy of joys.

Tonight we begin our multi-day LAN party, so if you wanna partake in this, are within travel time of me and have my phone number, give me a call and we’d be happy to have you and your computer! We have a large space available so it’s gonna be great! We’re getting set up tonight, but the big event really begins tomorrow afternoon and into the wee hours of the following morning. Good times as always, to be sure.

In computer news (my favorite!), I’ve recently aquired an old computer from a friend of mine and I’m in the process of turning it into a dedicated web server. I’ve already replaced the motherboard/CPU, added some RAM, and got a compatible power supply, so it at least starts up now. To make things easier for me, dad got me a KVM switch (KVM = Keyboard, Video, and Mouse), since I only have one of each of these things. This device lets me share my peripherals between the two computers and switch between them. Anyways, I still got a ways to go, but I’ll keep everyone posted, to be sure.

It’s quitting time! Yay!

Back Home Once More

Sunday, December 21st, 2003

Our trip to get Matthew was successful, so we are all home once again. We arrived down there about 18:00 on Friday and started back up north again after getting some dinner. We stopped for the night in Williams, CA and continued our journey once again the next morning. The pass was clear both on the way down and on the way up, so no problems were encountered. We passed the majority of the time listening to mp3s on my glorious Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox 3 mp3 player. My favorite part was when it was pouring out, I created the “Rain Mix”, which was all the songs I could find that mentioned rain or other poor weather. This included Here Comes the Rain, I’m Only Happy When It Rains, and It’s Raining Men (don’t ask), amungst many others. Good times.

Today was less fun, since I’ve spent the majority of it so far at work. I’ve been really tired most of the day because even though I got a decent amount of sleep last night, it wasn’t enough to make up for the lack of sleep I got the previous two nights. Oh well. I took a nap this afternoon on my lunch break, so I feel a bit better now.

My biggest worry is scheduling the next week’s activities. I’ve got two things I wanna do: have a LAN party, and go with mom, Matt and Kim up to Timberline Lodge for a night. Problem is they both need to be next week and I only get so many days off in a given timeframe. What it’s looking like is I’ll just show up to the LAN party when I can and work the rest of the time. Still, it bugs me because I’ve been really looking forward to this for months and I must cut my time there short. Still, I should be able to get away for Timberline without a problem. Luckily there’s a holidy that week (New Year’s Day), so as long as I work the 1st, which I am, I can still get 40 hours next week due to holiday pay. *sigh* The real world blows. I wanna be back in the fake world of college again! I really was beginning to like that whole three weeks off for the holidays thing.

In other news, I finally got my clutch replaced. I was getting really tired of worrying about it so I said “screw it!” and put the repairs on my credit card. At least it’s done now–I’ll pay for it when I can. On the lighter side, my car is much zippier now! I’d forgotten that I actually own a fast car; with the slippy clutch I couldn’t punch it, but now… Sorry mom and dad. 😛

Off we go, once again!

Friday, December 19th, 2003

Well, it’s 7 AM and I’m up. Dad, Megs and I are gonna be heading out in just a little bit to go get Matt from Cali for the holidays. We should be back tomorrow afternoon sometime. Wish us luck and I’ll catch ya when I catch ya!

I just got back from seeing The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. It rocked like a million guitars. I just learned that phrase tonight, and I think I like it. I find no fault with this movie. It rocked quite a lot indeed. But now I go to bed, as it’s nearing 5 am. Cheers.

My Paycheck is in Memphis

Monday, December 15th, 2003

So yeah, as the headline suggests, I didn’t get paid today as I had hoped. Due to poor weather our paychecks are in Memphis, because our head office is in Texas and that’s where the checks are printed. Stupid FedEx and their lack of transporters.

So yeah, lots of chatter on my previous post. Nothing about what I wanted people to chat about (the LAN party), but that’s OK because plans have changed some. It seems that Carson Hall is going to be closed over the break, so we cannot use the Blue Room to host our little party. I’m going to try to secure another room over there, but if I cannot we’ll need a new place to play. The requirements are it must be a large space capable of holding close to 20 computers for network play, it should have a fast Internet connection, and it should be a place that we won’t get in trouble for sleeping at, i.e. large classrooms probably won’t work due to the overnight factor. If nothing else, dad has graciously offered his bonus room for our use, but it may not be big enough for the ammount of people I’d like to have. So, if anyone out there has a good space, lemme know.

In other news, things are happening in my life to force me to think of the future, so this is kinda shaking things up. I can’t really go into details here for job security reasons, but suffice it to say I’m working on things.

Lastly, I’ve started work on the forum. Right now it does nothing, but it’s a nice start on a nice skeleton. It’s all still test code and such right now, but I’ve got ideas and as soon as I get some more time, I’m gonna keep working on it.

Christmas tidings!

Monday, December 8th, 2003

Ho, ho, ho! It’s December now, so I can cope with all the decorations I see about town, some of which have been up since October. At anyrate, I’ve got a couple of holiday-related announcements to make, and this seemed the obvious location to do so.

First off, is my Christmas List. People have been bugging me about this, so here it is. There are a few links in there for easy online ordering. ^_^ Also, I know a lot of you don’t know where Megan’s new web site is, so there’s that, and for quicker access, here is a direct link to Megan’s Christmas List in case anyone requires that information. I should point out that Megs’ web site is in an early draft mode, so rest assured that it will look much cooler in the future.

Lastly, I’ve actually got the next THREE weeks figured out for my schedule here at work in case anyone wants to know where I am and what days I have off.

All right, I think that’s it for now. Oh, and lastly if anyone’s interested in a kick-ass LAN party over the break, leave a note in the comments here. It’s gonna be so schw33t!

Oh boy! New month AND new stuff!

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2003

Well, I’ve just spent the last three hours adding more content to this silly old page of mine. I’ve got the last batch of pics from the uk, some pics of my apartment, and some pics I took whilst camping with Megs, Karen and Emily last summer. It took a while to get all those up there, and they’re probably gonna be it for a while, since I’m about out of disk quota on my server. Enjoy!

As you may recall, my camshaft broke recently, so I’ve posted a ChrisCam shot along those lines. They let me keep my old camshaft.

And lastly but not leastly, I’ve come up with yet another survey, this time all on my own. I know it’s tempting, but I want you all to please answer this one honestly. I’m genuinely curious where my readership is, so I don’t want anyone to answer “E” unless they are genuinely out of the country.

That’s all from me for now. Take care everyone!
