Paternity Leave: Day 17

Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

Today was spent almost entirely at home. I was awaiting a FedEx package for Kim, since dad originally thought she’s wouldn’t be at her place to receive it, however it turns out that she’s leaving for Burning Man a day later than planned, so she was home today, but by then the package was already en route. What was this important package, you may ask? A GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition! A very slick and Burning-Man-damage-resistant video camera. I took some test stills with it today:

It's me!

It’s me!

As you can see, it’s got a crazy-wide angle lens! It also came with a waterproof case you can operate it from within, so it’s crazy rugged. For those who don’t know, GoPros are often strapped to helmets of extreme sports folks or put on the end of surfboards–they’re super tiny. I know Kim will get some fun footage with this thing!

On a less pleasant note, I got a lovely letter in the mail today telling me that California will not be covering my leave of absence because they have no proof that I have a child. I faxed them a copy of the birth certificate that the hospital gave us, but I guess that’s not good enough. Guess I’ll be off to some government offices tomorrow to get the official state birth certificate. Then I gotta get it to the department that handles child care leave and hope they get me monies soon.

Anyways since today was spent mostly around the house, I don’t have much to report in the way of adventures. The only time I left the house was when Sam and I took a walk down to the local Starbucks and back, which is 1.4 miles each way. I learned a valuable lesson on walking longer distances with Birkenstocks (don’t). Sam fell asleep in her stroller on the return trip, which was nice of her.

Paternity Leave: Day 16

Tuesday, August 19th, 2014

A very uneasy quiet has descended on the dining room. Megs went to bed about 10 minutes ago, leaving me with Samantha who quickly started ramping up the fussiness. As a desperate measure, I put her back in her cradle and started bicycling her feet, saying “Feet-feet-feet-feet-feet-feet!”. This made her quiet down, and now she’s just staring at me.

I’m going to try to type this out fast, because I have no idea what’s going on at the moment.

Today was a fairly average day. Got up, fed the baby, and hit the road. I got some lunch at Baja Fresh, then we went to the Glendale Galleria to walk around. Didn’t buy anything, except an iced tea, a pack of gum, and some half-and-half for my coffee at home. A nice day out.

Our evening was fairly normal, too. But now…

She’s starting to fuss. I must go.

Paternity Leave: Day 15

Tuesday, August 19th, 2014

Tonight is a bad baby night. I just spent the last hour holding a crying/screaming Samantha who would not be calmed by anything. I did all the big four: changed her diaper, burped her, fed her, and held her. Nothing. Just screaming. Sometimes all you can do is put in earplugs and deal. Luckily, she hasn’t had a night like this in a while, so let’s hope it’s a fluke. Megs is in nursing her now, so I can write/sleep for a bit.

Rewinding the day, the rest was pretty good! Jacques and Hanh spent the night last night, so they were making pancakes in the kitchen when I got up this morning. They hung out until the afternoon when they had to leave, Jacques for SF and Hanh to visit other family in Riverside. Before that, I ran some errands which included: lunch at Philly’s Best (yum!), returned something to Sport Chalet ($$$), got some cat foot at PetCo (=^..^=), and groceries from Vons (also, yum!). Got home before Jacques and Hanh left, so we all hung out with Sammy for a while.

After they left, I managed to get Sam to take a nap.
Wherever she falls, there shall she nap

Which was good, cuz I have some business with hospital bills and day care to take care of. Still trying to lock down day care for Samantha for when both Megs and I are working, but I’ve got a good lead on a trusted nanny, so here’s hoping that works out!

Lastly, here’s some pictures of Maverick getting used to being second banana to Samantha:

Paternity Leave: Day 14

Monday, August 18th, 2014

We stayed home today, aside from a quick jaunt out for lunch at Coral’s in Burbank. After visiting with folks yesterday, we let folks come visit us today. Here’s Megs at lunch, marveling at Sammy being asleep:

After we got back from lunch, Megs’ father dropped by again today to see Sammy once more before returning to Portland. He brought us a bunch of diapers and some super cute clothes for Sammy. Very nice!

After he took off, it was just Megs, Sammy, and me for a few hours, so we hung out, did chores, and finished watching Entourage. Apparently they’re making a movie for the show that comes out next year. We’ll see.

Oh! While I’m thinking about it, I promised photos from yesterday, so here’s mom and Sammy sitting in the (formerly) gold chair:

And by pictures, apparently I mean picture, since I only took one. Ask Megs or someone else for more, I guess.

Guess who’s briefly back in town? This guy!

Yes, Jacques and Hanh finally got to meet Samantha! Yay! And then Matt and Skye came by! Yay! Friends aplenty, and everybody got lots of baby Sammy time. 😀

Paternity Leave: Day 13

Sunday, August 17th, 2014

Today was a good day, but this may be a short entry because it’s late and Sam is not sleeping yet.

Megan’s father came to visit Sam again today and we hung out for a while this afternoon. I took another picture, but it’s on my phone in the other room and I have to stay here and watch Sammy, so I’ll post it later.

From the afternoon and into the night we went back to our old building in North Hollywood, where Matt and Skye have taken up residence. A lovely housewarming party was had by all, and Sammy was welcomed and coo’d over quite a lot. It was her first party, and she did very well. Again, pictures were taken, but they’re elsewhere, so I’ll post them later.

Sam is starting to fuss, so I have to go. More later.

Paternity Leave: Day 12

Friday, August 15th, 2014

Today was Friday, which has always been one of my favorite days. So many possibilities and good times still ahead!

The outing for today was lunch at Blaze Pizza followed by Target, both of which are right next to each other in Pasadena. The A/C was busted at the pizza place, so we didn’t dawdle there long. Target had perfectly functional A/C, but they didn’t have what I was searching for. They did have a large number of cones guarding a very small area, however:

Must protect these 4 square feet at all costs!

Ended up changing Sam’s diaper in the bathroom there, and she was NOT pleased with the experience! Heated up some milk and gave it to her on-the-move in the stroller as we went back out to the car. She calmed down enough en route that we continued shopping at the hardware store where the DID have what I was looking for, as well as a few other things that I wanted. Mmmm…tools… Anyways, a quick Starbucks stop and we were on our way back home!

She ended up napping for over an hour after returning home, so I was able to put away the tools and take care of various minor household chores like doing the dishes, etc. I also re-drew eyebrows on the dog.

So concerned!

A little while after Megs got home, her father came to visit Samantha for the first time! Flew in from Portland today and he’ll be around this weekend.

He was tired and had to get back to his hotel, so Megs and I went for our first dinner out just us and Sam. Went well enough, although Sammy got real fussy about half way through, so Megs and I took turns walking her around.

After dinner, we came home and I put a bow on her head to increase her cute factor by 5%.

Paternity Leave: Day 11

Thursday, August 14th, 2014

Today we helped Matt and Skye move some large things to their new apartment. And by “we”, I mean me. Samantha wasn’t very much use at moving even the smallest of boxes! At any rate, we got the bed and mattress moved, which was the big thing requiring help. Skye’s mom did a wonderful job of watching Sammy while we moved stuff; even put up with an extended fussy/screaming period!

After moving, Sam and I ran some errands and came home. Megs and I had fish for dinner and Sam had milk, like always. What a boring diet! I’m sure she’ll mix it up more someday.

No pictures today, sorry! Too busy moving stuff and we forgot to get a group selfie before Sam and I left, mostly because she was screaming her head off and I was anxious to get going.

Tomorrow morning Sam turns three months old! I’m told everything will be better then. Let’s hope she’s as punctual as she was with her birth date!

Paternity Leave: Day 10

Wednesday, August 13th, 2014

Today was a good day. Sam was very well behaved and ate like a machine! Growth spurt, I presume. We watched some Entourage (Oh yeah!), went for lunch, and went to Old Navy so I could get a pair of shorts. Then it was home and more feeding for her. Managed to get some laundry done, too.

After Megs got home we had dinner, more baby feeding, and then I played some Bioshock Infinite. I’m trying to get to an airship at the moment to get the hell outta Dodge, but we keep getting side-tracked. I think right now we’re trying to find some kind of electricity substitute, whose name I forget, to activate some gondola to get to the ship. Whew! Still, cool game.

After that I washed a baby! First time for me, so Megs advised. Shoulda got a picture, but I didn’t so here’s her at Panera:

After Bioshock and bathing, we finished season 7 of Entourage. One more to go!

Paternity Leave: Day 9

Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

Second day into week two started off pretty well! Sam let me sleep in, which was very nice of her. She took her bottle, no problem, and we headed off to Burbank to get a weird light bulb, some imperial-sized Allen wrenches, and some lunch. I had a burger and fries, she had a nap:

Sam sleeps through my lunch

I needed a small light bulb for my bed headboard lamp, which has a smaller-than-normal base. They had what I needed at Lowes, so I also got some imperial (as opposed to metric, which I already have) Allen wrenches, because apparently I didn’t have any, and I needed some the other day.

We went home after lunch and Kim dropped by to pick up a microwave we didn’t need anymore. Sadly it turned out to be too big for her space, so if anyone wants a good-sized microwave, let me know. Anyways, we hung out for a bit and I poked at her car trying to figure out where a Ford Focus hides its air filter. It was surprisingly buried! I also took apart her passenger door to check out a suspected loose speaker. Fun! Kim left just as Sam started to get fussy.

The calm before the storm

Luckily, Megs got home soon after that and fed an angry Sammy. I would have fed her again by bottle, but Megs was already on her way home. Timing is hard with babies!

The rest of the evening Megs suggested I play video games and she’d watch. I love her! Anyways, I finally started Bioshock Infinite, which I’d been meaning to play for a while and it’s totally cool. A very compelling city-in-the-sky setting, for those who don’t know. Set about a century ago. Nifty! For those who want to know where I’m at, I just got the girl out of the tower. Only played for a few hours, so I’m sure there’s more to go!

Until tomorrow, so long, solid citizen!

Paternity Leave: Day 8

Monday, August 11th, 2014

First week complete, on to the second!

Today was pretty standard, I suppose. Sam woke me up around 9:00 for her second breakfast (Megan had given her her first before she left for work hours before), and I was able to get her fed and back to sleep for a few hours, which was wonderful. At about 11:30 she woke up again, so we did lunch–first her, then me. We drove out to Philly’s Best for my Monday cheese steak, which was great as always. After that I wanted to go for a drive, so we went up to Vasquez Rocks. I took no pictures, didn’t get out of the car, did two donuts in the dirt parking lot and came home. We’ll go back later when I think to bring my good camera and shoes that aren’t Birkenstocks.

We came home, hung out for a bit, then went back out for a couple more errands. Here’s us hanging out:

Just hangin'

Megs went to the gym after work today, so she didn’t get home until after 8. Long day for me, but Sam was relatively well-behaved so all’s well. 😉

Last night, Sam was quite the fussy girl until after 1:00 a.m. Here’s hoping tonight goes better.
