Bad at Blogging

Thursday, April 16th, 2020

So, it’s been months since my last post here, which over the last few years is still not a bad average. At any rate, I’d like to write more here, especially with the world the way it is at the moment, so no time like the present!

In site news, I’ve migrated the whole thing from DreamHost to my own AWS EC2 instance. I’ve also moved the DNS from Hover to Google and all my email forwards to my gmail address now. Seems cleaner, but please let me know if you notice any odd behavior in the site.

But yeah. The world. If you’re reading this in the future, please note the date stamp: The entire world is dealing with Covid-19. I’ve been working from home and Sammy has been home from school for over a month. Like many states, Oregon is participating in “Social Distancing”, which means very little contact with the world and very little to do outside the house. We’re getting by OK, and generally it’s fine, but some days are harder than others. Most days it’s work (on weekdays), TV, video games, playing in the yard, cooking, cleaning, and reading. Sometimes we go for walks around the neighborhood. Most parks and hiking trails are closed. I go grocery shopping once a week. It’d be kind of nice if we weren’t forced into it, and there wasn’t an overshadowing cloud of a deadly pandemic.

Last post was in July? Real quick rundown of what’s happened since then: we’ve painted the inside of the house, unpacked our stuff, Sammy started kindergarten, I sold the Charger and got a Tacoma truck, we saw Saint Motel play the Roseland, Megs took the Oregon Bar exam (results pending), we made some new friends, and we had some visitors as well as a couple parties.

Testing? Are we back?

Thursday, October 4th, 2018

Hello ChrisWeb! Miss me? I’m Chris! The namesake of this pointless domain.
I’ve recently pulled back from Facebook and Tumblr, leaving only the posting of Sammy pics to Instagram and chatting with friends on Slack. I felt like I still needed some kind of general shouting into the void space, so here we are.
Big news today–I paid off my car! Yes, my 2012 Dodge Charger SXT is now all mine and no longer the shared property of my credit union. Seems fitting that some of the very first posts on this blog were about a new (to me) car back in 2000, and now with this revival we’re back to cars. Guess I’m a fan.
In other news, I’m still working for Walt Disney Imagineering and Megs is still lawyering. Sammy’s 4–almost 4-and-a-half–, and everyone is in good health. More posts to come, I hope.

Paternity Leave: Final Day

Saturday, September 6th, 2014

I know I still have the weekend, but today is the official end of my paternity leave. As I’ve said before, each week has gone faster than the previous, and this one was no exception. Excluding being rear-ended by another car yesterday, it wasn’t a bad week.
Matt and Skye came over this evening, and in fact just now left at 1:30 a.m. Matt made us stir fry and we’ve spent the last few hours playing Magic cards. We got a new box of booster packs and we all had fun with a draft round as well as just some regular opening and sharing of cards. If you don’t know what that means, don’t worry about it. What matters is that we all had a lovely evening.
Samantha went to bed a few hours ago and has been sleeping soundly. She was very well-behaved for most of the week, in fact.
I don’t know exactly what the future of this blog will be, but I do plan to keep posting here. Hopefully more than annually this time. The subject will probably return to more general “Life of Chris” stuff, but to be sure Samantha will always feature. I was able to fill the column inches the past few weeks because unlike more normal workday stuff, paternity leave isn’t full of Disney secrets. When I blog in a normal work week, all I can usually say is “I went to work and did amazing cool stuff that I can’t go into detail on, or I might get fired.” Gets repetitive after a while. I’ll probably at least give further details on the saga of my poor car and her busted up rear end for while. And always pictures of Samantha!
To conclude, here’s me sans daughter, but there’s sure to be a nearly inexhaustible supply of photos in the days, weeks, and years to come.

Paternity Leave: Day 32

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

Today was probably the worst. Started off normal enough, although I didn’t sleep great. Also found out Disney didn’t pay me this week, which I am looking into. After some phone calls to HR and Payroll, Sam and I went out for lunch, I ran a couple errands, and then BAM! Got rear-ended by another car when I was stopped to make a left turn. Wasn’t high-speed and everyone is fine, but this sucks. Now the back end of my car’s all f*cked up and I’ve just run out of time to deal with that fact. The other vehicle was a City of Pasadena vehicle for the Rose Bowl. One of those cars with a license plate that never expires and is all numbers? Yeah, that. Anyways, after exchanging information, I took Samantha to the pediatrician to check her out. Doctor said she’s “perfect”, (well, duh, I knew that, but thanks!), so we went home. Never did make it to Vons.
Here’s some pictures of my poor car:
Here’s a couple of much nicer pictures of Sammy:

And to top it off, Megs also had a shitty day. It’s almost 9 p.m. and she’s still not home from work! I’m glad we’re all fine, but I need a hug.

Runs On Dreams and Starlight

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

OK, perhaps it doesn’t run on dreams and starlight, but it is my first new NEW car! It’s a 2012 Dodge Charger SXT, and it’s super cool. It’s a full-size car with a 3.6L V6 engine, four doors, seats 5 comfortably, and gets decent gas mileage. Also looks sweet and has a lot of creature comforts like dual climate zones, 8.4″ touch screen for controlling everything, and heated seats. Talks to my phone, my iPod, and even reads SD cards of mp3s. I’m pretty stoked about it and I can’t wait to go on a road trip to Oregon 2nd weekend in October!

Birthdays and cars, oh my!

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Holy crap, I’m 30 now! I can’t believe I started this silly blog thing when I was 19 and I’ve been keeping it up all this time. More than TEN YEARS for ol’ ChrisWeb here! Sheesh! You’d think I’d take better care of it then. Speaking of things that happened over 10 years ago, remember that Daytona of mine? My blue car? Yeah, so I finally got a new one:

Click for more pictures. Call it an early mid-life crisis (you wouldn’t be the first), but as I am now actually driving to work, I needed something more reliable (i.e. from this century), so I figured I may as well get something a little nicer and fun. Also, CONVERTIBLE! 😀
For my birthday this year, I dragged all my friends out to the woods to go camping in February. Here’s the proof:

Chris' 30th Birthday (Camping)

We all had a good time (or so I’m told), and it didn’t get below freezing over night, so that’s good. We were up north of Santa Barbara in the San Padres Nation Forest at a place called Paradise Campground. It was nice and we had a respectable campfire. Thanks to Megs, Donut, Kim, Ozzzy, Anna, Matt, Gilmer, Megan, Kyle, Jacques, Hanh, and Asha for coming out! You guys are the best!
Work is still going great, but of course I can’t tell you any details. Just know that it’s challenging me in ways I haven’t been challenged in a good while. I’m certainly keeping busy!

Went For a Drive

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Last night I wanted to go for a drive, now that my car was working. I headed north on Lankershim until I couldn’t go north anymore, then I jogged over to the west and continued north again, then I wrapped around to the east on the other side of the hills and came back around the long way through Glendale. Got good and lost and had a wonderful time just going on dead reckoning. Luckily, it was near sunset so I could always tell which way was west. Here’s a map of my travels:

I generally avoided highways until I was done wandering and decided it was time to head back to base. Also, I wanted to drive fast. =)

Car's Fixed!

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Yay! I got my car fixed!
This morning I got up at 7 to get my car towed to my mechanic. After an hour, he calls me back and tells me it’s the battery cable header that was causing all the trouble. Fixed and good to go with parts and labor only $50! I consider it a red-letter day when I can get out of the mechanic’s for under $200, so this was just fantastic! The tow was free too, cuz of our membership in AAA. Better outcome than I’d even hoped for.
So in short, my banzai blue baby still lives. Go car go!

My Damn Car… Again!

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Once again, I’m having car troubles. This time it seems to be something electrical. Here’s what happened:
I went grocery shopping. First to Trader Joes for some wine, then to Hows for our usual groceries. After getting back to the car, I went to start it up and nothing. Everything shuts down. The lights on the dash lit dimly, but that’s it. No engine turning over, nothing. If I open/close the door after a moment, the car seems to reset and dome light comes back on and I can put the car in accessories mode and the radio works, etc. I can even put the ignition into the “On” position and I can power the windows and stuff, however, if I try to start it, everything shuts down again until I “reset” it. Sometimes I can hear the solenoid click, but only after the car has reset. I checked and all the fuses appear to be intact. Also, jump-starting did no good either.
My guesses are: 1) it’s a problem with the solenoid, 2) it’s a problem with the starter, 3) it’s a problem with the ignition, 4) there’s a broken “fusible link” somewhere, 5) broken relay, and/or 6) there’s a short somewhere else. #4 has happened with this car before, as has #3, albeit the symptoms were different (the cylinder for the key was physically broken in that case), #2 happened with my first car (Taurus), and the others are all likely because my car has always a weak electrical system.
Any mechanics out there? =(
