Paternity Leave: Day 19

Saturday, August 23rd, 2014

Today was more government offices. We started with the California Employment Development Department, to try to track down my Paid Family Leave stuff, since there is no Paid Family Leave office this side of Fresno, and I wasn’t about to drive there! They said that this wasn’t the right office, but the lady there was kind enough to look up my information on the system and said that the documents I submitted yesterday should take care of things, so here’s hoping!
After hanging out in downtown LA, Sam and I went back up to Pasadena to take care of Maverick’s license renewal at the Pasadena Humane Society. Nice facility they got there! Their kennels are nice and outdoors and there’s trees and stuff around. Anyways, after taking care of that we went home.
The plan for this evening was to play Magic cards with Matt and Skye, so shortly after I got home Matt showed up, followed an hour or so later by Megan. Skye would be joining us after she got off work a while later, so we started prepping dinner, which was to be grilled stuff on the BBQ. After searching our freezer, I found some chicken thighs, half a salmon fillet, and two small boneless pork chops. Matt brought some potatoes, so we were in business! Or so I thought…
Turns out our grill wouldn’t start. I thought we must be out of propane, so I went to Vons to get some more. I also picked up some garlic bread and asparagus while I was there. However, a lack of propane was not the problem! I deduced it was a bad regulator hose, so off I went again to the hardware store for a new one. Got back home, hooked it up, and FIRE! Yes! Dinner was ON!
We started cooking shortly before Skye arrived, which was a pity, because we were hoping to have everything cooked by then, but oh well. Eventually dinner was great, and afterwards we played a few games of Magic:

For the record, my cheap mono red creature deck crushed Matt’s experimental blue/black deck of pain three times in a row. His white heroic deck, however, trounced me thoroughly after that. A lovely night!

Paternity Leave: Day 9

Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

Second day into week two started off pretty well! Sam let me sleep in, which was very nice of her. She took her bottle, no problem, and we headed off to Burbank to get a weird light bulb, some imperial-sized Allen wrenches, and some lunch. I had a burger and fries, she had a nap:

I needed a small light bulb for my bed headboard lamp, which has a smaller-than-normal base. They had what I needed at Lowes, so I also got some imperial (as opposed to metric, which I already have) Allen wrenches, because apparently I didn’t have any, and I needed some the other day.
We went home after lunch and Kim dropped by to pick up a microwave we didn’t need anymore. Sadly it turned out to be too big for her space, so if anyone wants a good-sized microwave, let me know. Anyways, we hung out for a bit and I poked at her car trying to figure out where a Ford Focus hides its air filter. It was surprisingly buried! I also took apart her passenger door to check out a suspected loose speaker. Fun! Kim left just as Sam started to get fussy.

Luckily, Megs got home soon after that and fed an angry Sammy. I would have fed her again by bottle, but Megs was already on her way home. Timing is hard with babies!
The rest of the evening Megs suggested I play video games and she’d watch. I love her! Anyways, I finally started Bioshock Infinite, which I’d been meaning to play for a while and it’s totally cool. A very compelling city-in-the-sky setting, for those who don’t know. Set about a century ago. Nifty! For those who want to know where I’m at, I just got the girl out of the tower. Only played for a few hours, so I’m sure there’s more to go!
Until tomorrow, so long, solid citizen!

Babies are hard; crying babies are the worst.

Saturday, June 28th, 2014

First off, let’s start by saying that both Samantha and Megan are in excellent health. Sam weighed in at 7 lbs. 14 oz. yesterday, so she’s gaining weight like a champ. That being said, she’s got this bad “habit” of getting really fussy/gassy after her nighttime feedings. At times she can just cry and cry and cry with nothing to be done about it. Other times, stuff like swaying, burping, or rocking can help. As adults used to getting a good night’s rest, this is a new challenge for the both of us. The way it usually goes is Megs will give Sam her 9-10 o’clock-ish feeding and then spend the hour or so afterwards trying to get her to go to sleep. Sometimes this is successful, but lately it has not been. If the latter, Megs will sleep for an hour and a half or so while I stay up with Sam trying to get her to calm down. At about 3 hours after the previous feeding started, Megs will feed her again. We then repeat this procedure, sometimes until dawn. Such is life.
In other news, I’ve taken up Magic cards again! Matt and Skye came over last weekend with some cards and the four of us all had a good time with them, so Megs bought me and herself some cards. Last night, the four of us played a few games, in between crying baby times. Not a bad way to spend a Friday night for new parents like us.
No other plans for this weekend, other than trying to catch up on some sleep. 🙂

WoW With Friends

Friday, November 12th, 2010

So, last night I played World of Warcraft with some good real-life friends, Matt & Kim. We were on Skype so we could chat while we played and it was a lotta fun. According to Skype, we were on the “phone” for about three hours, but it seemed like less.
I must say, it’s been handy having some permanent friends all my life who can’t get rid of me, no matter how hard they try! Hope mom and dad appreciate that we all still get along pretty well after all these years, and we find ways to hang out and play games even if we’re many miles apart.
At any rate, Kim’s up to level 11 with her Warlock and I’ve started a new Priest (now level 12), and Matt’s rolled yet another character (Warrior), whom I’ve just been informed is now also level 11. We play on the “Hyjal” server if anyone out there wants to hang with the Brunner kids.

Random Stuff

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Last weekend I went down to Long Beach to upgrade Kim’s computer with some of Matt’s old parts–basically a whole computer. She’s now able to play the latest offerings from Blizzard.
Megs got a new cell phone–we are now both of Clan iPhone! ph34r our snootiness!
It’s been really windy here today! The palm trees on Lankershim are finally going to go down, I just know it!
Megs and I (and sometimes Matt) have been having fun in World of Warcraft running through really old content that used to be hard, but is now doable with far fewer players than as originally designed. A handful of level 80 characters can take care of what used to need 20-40 level 60 guys, it seems. Good times.
Daylight Savings Time ended yesterday! Everyone set their clocks? It’s only 5 and it’s already getting dark out now.
I’m finally getting around to finishing Batman: Arkham Asylum on the Xbox 360. I’ve got two major sections left, I think: Poison Ivy and then The Joker. Fun game.
I’m also excited that tonight is the premier of Conan O’Brien’s new late-night show. Watch “Conan” at 11PM on TBS tonight!
Lastly, here’s something awesome I came across today:

Let's Do This

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Well, it seems that blargs are going once again, (see: Kimi, Kelly, Annie), so to fend off future mocking, I post!
As usual, life goes on. The past few weeks have been fairly normal, the one exception being Megs’ 30th birthday at the end of October. We gathered up the usual suspects to play laser tag and eat cake, and both events were a success. No pictures this time because: a) it’s dark in the laser tag arena & there’s no time for cameras in battle, and b) I already have a lot of pictures of us hanging around our living room eating cake and drinking tasty beverages. Suffice it to say, that fun was had and we’re glad everyone could make it.
Later this week, Megs’ folks are gonna visit for a few days and will be staying at our place Thursday and Friday nights. Megs and I haven’t seen them since last Christmas, so we’re glad they could get down south for this. Not sure what we’re gonna do, but I’m sure we’ll come up with something.
Also, in a couple weeks it’s Thanksgiving already, and for the first time we’re hosting it at our place! Mom’s gonna bring & cook food, and we’ll also have the siblings, Grandparents G, and a few welcome friends. Aside from the expected turkey feast, mom, the sibs, and I are going to be going through old family video footage to try to edit together some kinda family DVD. A while back I digitized the old Video8 camcorder tapes, so now it’s finally time to go through all the raw footage and put together something nice out of it. I’ll see what I can do about posting some clips up here when we’re done.
Lessee…. what else… Megs and I have still be playing World of Warcraft, which is fun. Always more enjoyable together than solo. On the TV has been 30 Rock, The Office, Parks and Recreation, Community, The Big Bang Theory, Mythbusters, Castle, Glee, and of course The Venture Bros! I recommend all of these shows, however Venture Bros is a little… odd. But in a good way! Wacky show.
I’m still working for Disney and Megs is still in law school, but she’s nearing the end of this particular journey soon, and I think we’ll all be glad for that! Law school is *hard*! Who knew?
Lastly, I leave you with a terrifying picture (this is not me in the picture):

So, I finally joined the 21st century of console gaming and got an Xbox; an Xbox 360, to be exact. Pretty cool so far, and I’m liking the Xbox Live thingy, but I’ve already had a problem. The Xbox 360 is supposed to be able to play some original Xbox games, so I went out and got a copy of “Halo” and “Halo 2”, the flagship series of Microsoft’s Xbox console. Neither game would play. Got a weird, uninformative error message (thanks, Microsoft!) and that was that. Checking Microsoft’s support web site, all I could find was “the disc might be dirty”. After cleaning the discs, polishing them with Turtle Wax (seriously, this has helped me revive old discs in the past), and even exchanging them for new discs, still no go. On a whim, I swapped out my Xbox’s hard drive for one from work and bingo! Worked like a charm. With this information to go on, I Googled around some more and came across a useful forum post at that had me: 1) take apart the hard drive enclosure, revealing the 2.5″ SATA drive inside, 2) plug said drive into my PC, 3) run 3rd party software to copy over a working partition containing the original Xbox emulation software. After putting everything back together again I was up and running.
As an aside, Microsoft’s phone tech support is as useless as I’d feared. They basically featured humans reading me the support web pages and transferring me between departments. And to add insult to injury, I was mysteriously cut off right at call center closing time, so I couldn’t call back. Now, I’ve worked at a call center before and calls do not suddenly get cut off at closing time; the center simply stops receiving new calls. I know it’s naïve to call a call center near closing time and expect excellent service, but show a little professionalism guys! I’ve been in the computer business a long, long time, and I think I could count on one hand the number of times Microsoft tech support has been of more use to me than a bag full of dead snails.
Anyways, my Xbox Live Gamertag is “TopherPerson” if anyone out there wants to befriend me. I don’t have a lot of games yet, but Megs is enjoying Viva Piñata.

Egads! A Post!

So yeah, for those of you not on Facebook, I must have seemed to have fallen off the face of the Earth. I find that I don’t post here as often now that I have another outlet for the random thoughts that float through my head. But in any case, here is the State of Chris.
When last we posted, Megs and I were up in Palo Alto for her moot court competition. It went very well, I thought, however her team did not advance. Still a good experience all around. Week after that, Matt was down visiting on his spring break and at the end of the week we went up to mom’s place to help with some home improvement stuff up there. It was good to see mom and Matt and Kim all at the same time.
This past weekend, Cindy was down visiting from Seattle and we had some good times with her, Matt, Anna, Kim, Jacques, Tim, Badier and all the rest. Thursday night Cindy, Anna, and I went to a nice pub. Friday night we had game night at our place with Cindy, Matt, Anna, Tim, and Jacques in attendance. Played some Munchkin and some Guitar Hero. Saturday Megs, Cindy, Matt, Anna, Tim and I all went down to Venice Beach to get a little sun, sand, and shopping. After it got dark it was time to head to Pasadena for Badier’s big going-away party. I can’t believe he’s moving away! We all had a great time and I did not drink to excess.
Today was much more mellow. Got lunch with Megs, and then went to Matt and Anna’s place to play a (relatively) quick game of Catan before Cindy had to catch her plane home. We were gonna get together tonight to watch Cowboy Bebop, but we decided to postpone until next Sunday. This weekend has been packed enough, and I think we all needed some time to relax and regroup before the work week begins again.
Oh, and in other news MATT C. AND ANNA GOT ENGAGED YESTERDAY!!! We’re all very happy and wish them the absolute best!
Once again, I bury the lead in my blog post. It’s not the first time and it probably won’t be the last.
I’ll try not to neglect good ol’ ChrisWeb as much going forward. Chris loves you!

Facebook Fights My Blog

Friday, February 27th, 2009

I feel bad for neglecting good ol’ ChrisWeb here. I’ve been spending more time updating my Facebook status and doing silly memes over there, however that generally only updates the 149 Friends I have on Facebook and not the world at large. For the record, I only befriend people I know in real life on Facebook, so it’s not like I’m sharing personal information with random weirdos on the ‘net. Only the random weirdos I know personally.
In any event, not a whole lot going on with me. Megs and I have both survived the February Cold/Flu of Suffering, so we’re back to our nominally-healthy selves. Work has been good, and we just released another content update for Pirates this week. Check it out! Tell your friends!
Changing subjects, I still really love my Blackberry Curve. It’s a sweet little device and does all the things I want out of a cell phone. I know it’s no iPhone, but honestly, I think I prefer it. It has an actual physical keyboard and it’s still smaller. I don’t need to play silly iPhone games, even if it does “have an app for that”. In case folks didn’t know, there are apps for the Blackberry too! My favorites are Google Maps (with GPS!) and Facebook. Man, I’m such a Facebook fiend these days!
Oh! And the other day I bought The Secret of Mana on the Wii Virtual Console. I forgot how great this game is! It was also really ambitious for its time, 1993. Sure, the AI and pathing are crude now, and sprite-based orthographic games are certainly not in vogue as much as they were 16 years ago, but at the time it was pretty damn advanced! Having worked in the video games industry for almost five years now, I can appreciate how much work this was, especially since it was all done in 65816 assembly code! ASSEMBLY!!! This was basically a supped-up 8 or 16-bit version of the good ol’ 6502 that the original Nintendo ran on. Hardcore.
Lastly, what is more awesome than a unicorn puking a rainbow? If it’s needlepoint:

Gone Bug Fixin'

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

So I’ve got a few bugs assigned to me at work, so I’m grindin’ away on ’em. Right now I’m waiting for my model tree to finish rebuilding, but after it’s done I get to try to figure out why the avatar isn’t playing the kneel emote when /kneel’ing. After that, I’ve got some random client exception that I don’t have a stack trace on to track down, and then I get to figure out why some other custom anim isn’t working. Ah, the glamorous life of a game programmer!
Last weekend I went up to mom’s place to celebrate Grandma Gallagher’s birthday. We all had a nice time and dinner/dessert was excellent! I took a few pictures, so if I get ’em posted, I’ll link ’em here.
Not much else to say. Life continues and I’m right along with it. I’ve been trying to get to bed earlier
(early to bed, early to rise, etc), but it’s hard when insomnia says “no, no, no!” If anyone has any killer tips on how to make oneself fall asleep, I’m all ears.
I leave you now with the Star Wars Galactic Empire’s strategy for all things (via Cracked):
